A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
